Although there is no direct link between acne and diet, there are some foods to avoid to prevent acne. It is extremely rare not to find any single person in this world who has not experienced the nightmarish occurrence of acne at some point in life.
Acne forms when there is an excess of oil that is trapped beneath the skin. The trapped sebum turns into a favorable breeding ground for the P.acnes bacteria. The bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum then wreak havoc on our skin, forming the much dreaded pimples.
1) Sweet And Refined Starchy Food
White bread, white sugar, white rice, cookies, pies, fast food and processed food convert quickly into sugar after we eat them, making our blood glucose level rise quickly. This leads to a surge of insulin and an insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1 in your body. Your sebaceous glands are triggered to go into overdrive, causing an over-production of sebum.
High levels of blood sugar have been proven to reduce your body’s ability to fight off infection. There is medical evidence that ingesting just a hundred grams of sugar in any form can reduce your immune system’s ability to function by as much as fifty per cent. This effect can last for up to five hours. An immune system weakened by sugar intake will take as long as two weeks instead of the usual five days to fight a pimple, most likely leaving an ugly scar behind.
Therefore, switch instead to whole grains, and cut down on sugar. Eat wholemeal bread, brown rice, sweet potato and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. The extra fiber you take will help cleanse your colon. Instead of biscuits, cake and ice-cream, switch to fresh fruit and low fat unsweetened yogurt for dessert instead.
2) Dairy Products
Dairy products may aggravate acne. Milk contains two proteins – casein and whey. Casein is responsible for much of the allergy problems associated with milk. In the meantime, whey has been shown to have immunological stimulating properties. Therefore, if you have acne prone skin, you may wish to reduce your intake of whole fat milk, switch to lactose-free non-fat milk or switch to soy milk.
3) Red Meat
This is one food that causes acne. Meat contains hormones, steroids and hormone-like substances which can affect the hormonal balance in the body. We all know that an increased production of specific hormones can trigger acne. Doctors have found that women who eat meat regularly are more likely to suffer from acne and excessive growth of hair in locations where hair growth in women is usually minimal or absent. For a more healthy source of protein, you can switch to fish, nuts or tofu.
If you avoid foods that cause acne, and include foods to help fight acne in your diet, you will be well on your way to acne-free skin.
